Australian University Rankings

List of Australian universities by ranking using Australia-only data, including course ratings and graduate salaries.

Australian Universities in World Rankings

Australian universities are well represented in world university rankings. Depending on the ranking system, Australia has anywhere between 2 and 7 of the world's top 100 universities.

You can see the world rankings of top Australian universities on this site. We have reproduced the survey rankings of QS and Times, the academic research rankings of ARWU and the web publishing rankings of Webometrics.

Why world rankings are dodgy

Although we have reproduced world rankings, we caution against using them for comparing Australian universities. World rankings only use international data - primarily opinion surveys and publication statistics.

World rankings don't consider student ratings or graduate salaries for example (since they can't be compared across countries). The rankings really just measure academic prestige and how much research universities publish (see university rankings explained).

Australian University Rankings

The most reliable Australian university rankings are produced by University Reviews Australia (URA). They use Australian data on course ratings and graduate salaries. University performance is measured in a balanced way that focuses on education quality.

URA scores universities out of five on three performance indicators. The three scores for each university are then added to give an overall score and ranking.

Repute (33%) - university reputation or prestige

Australian university rankings component - reputation.Repute is measured by how well a university has done in world university rankings. It is an indicator of the esteem in which a university is held by academics and broader society.

Example: A score of 4.2 out of 5.0 for UWA (University of Western Australia) means it is one of Australia's higher ranking universities. It also implies a degree from UWA is highly regarded by employers.

Ratings (33%) - course satisfaction of graduates

Australian university ranking component - course satisfaction ratings by former students.Ratings is a measure of course satisfaction reported in the Australian Graduate Survey.

Example: UWA scored 3.3 out of 5.0 for Ratings. It means recent graduates of UWA expressed an above-average level of satisfaction with courses compared to graduates of other universities. It indicates UWA has done well in keeping students happy.

Results (33%) - graduate salaries, employment and further study

Australian universities ranked by pay, salary and employment outcomes for graduates. Results is a salary measure that mathematically combines observed salaries, rates of further study and unemployment.

Example: UWA scored the maximum 5.0 out of 5.0 for Results. It means UWA is Australia's top ranking university for graduate outcomes (based on data from the Australian Graduate Survey).

Further detail about the ranking methodology is available from University Reviews Australia rankings.
